Grout Cleanup & Storage (Do It Right or Pay for It Later)

Now that you’re finished grouting, it’s time to clean up properly.

If you used a disposable container for mixing, simply toss it in the trash. If you’re keeping your container, dump any leftover grout into newspaper or a plastic bag and discard it. Then dry-rub the remaining residue out over a trash can.

Use a dedicated “slop bucket” to rinse and clean tools and containers.

NEVER CLEAN GROUT IN YOUR SINK. That means do not rinse tools, containers, or sponges in your plumbing. Grout hardens anywhere it lands—including inside pipes—and the only one who benefits from that mistake is your plumber.

For small-scale projects, wipe tools with disposable towels first, then rinse them in the slop bucket if needed. Whatever you do, don’t risk your plumbing.

When finished, dump the slop bucket contents in an inconspicuous outdoor area. If that’s not an option, let it settle, carefully pour off the clear liquid at the top, allow the remaining solids to dry completely, then knock the container to loosen it and toss the trash.
